The
company was started in 1868 by William Jones, trained as a silversmith
apprentice, and supported financially by his family and other prominent members
of the Quaker community including Joel Cadbury and Theodore Barclay. The
business, a genuine brass foundry, flourished and William was soon able to
repay his benefactors although he 'borrowed' the name of one and included it in
his company title.
The
character of the product range gradually changed from 'cast' to 'pressed' or
stamped brass, and eventually items in steel, copper, aluminium, stainless steel
etc.
The Company which was initially in Windmill Street moved to
Gregoe Street and then onto it's present site in Bath Row in 1892. Still owned
by the original family, the business is now run by William's great - great
grandchildren.
